Building Update

We have good news! We just signed a three year rental-agreement with the new owners of our building!

​

As many of you know, at the end of last year we knew that the owners of the space intended to sell as quickly as possible. Early this year we shared that we hoped to raise funds to try and purchase the building if we could. We actively looked at various options - shared space and dual-ownership - amongst others in trying to come up with a pragmatic but long-term solution.

 

​​We had known for a while that friends at Christ City were looking for a space in the DTES.  Heath has been on our team for the last four plus years as a Community Chaplain while also serving as a minister at Christ City.  As he continues his commitment to neighbouring, Heath will lead a ministry called Urban Chapel in the 543 Powell space. This will continue the relational work he is already doing.  Jacob’s Well will have the building in the afternoons, just as we do now.

We are grateful to have a good relationship with the owners of the building and are hopeful for the ways that this sustainable friendship allows us to extend our table without the fear of impending eviction.   

 

We can’t speak of the building without thanking Mission Possible for allowing us many years of gracious use of their space, especially when we desperately needed a place in 2017.​

 

What does this mean for the Well? 

 

On a pragmatic front, it means sustainable rent access and a friendly lease of space into the immediate future and possibly beyond. 

 

Operationally this does not change anything. Jacob’s Well will continue to operate much as it has always done, a place of welcome based around the powerful relationship of friendship - friendship & mutuality, justice and prayer, learning and teaching.

We continue to be an autonomous registered charity, a welcome place for all who come to our door.
