My time at the Jacob’s Well community kitchen was a wonderful and very formative time for me. Growing up in a typical middle-class suburb and church, so much of the experience of communities like the DTES was hidden from me. It was a wonderful thing to come to Jacob’s Well every week, cook and eat and clean together, and to form true friendships with people who were so very different from me, knowing all the while that it was God who had brought us together. Somehow, He was at work in and through this little community. I learned a lot about friendship, commitment, and the false idols of “results” and “efficiency” over against faithfulness and presence. It has been years since I’ve been at Jacob’s Well, and I’ve yet to find anything else quite like it. God - thank you for Jacob’s Well and your work there! I am currently living in Calgary starting a residency in Internal Medicine.
